He created a team that was unbeatable and could beat any opponent on any given day. The team had aggressive batsmen, smart fielders and good bowlers who collectively helped them in the process of winning the World Cup. Arjuna Ranatunga was an inspiring and strategic captain who gave full license to the openers to hit the bowlers and worked well with the middle order batsmen to do justice to the platform provided by the openers. Sri Lanka had a clash with Australia and won the final outright.
It was Steve Waugh, the new captain of the Australian team at the time, who went to England in search of victory for the second time. Although Australia did not do well at the start of the tournament as they lost their first three matches. But as the race progressed, there was no looking back. Steve Waugh was Australia’s best batsman in the 1999 World Cup.
