Indian cricket fans were left devastated after India were heartbroken from the ICC World Cup 2019 after an 18-run win over New Zealand in their first semi-final at Old Trafford in Manchester. Fans were angry that India, one of the ‘candidates’ to win the prestigious trophy, could not even reach the final of the four-year event. The blame game began as many pointed their fingers at the current team’s head coach, Ravi Shastri, while others blamed captain Virat Kohli and the team’s management for underperforming during the exhibition period.

Now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited new candidates for the post of head coach as Shastri’s contract expires after India’s West Indies tour. However, Shastri was able to continue as the head coach of the team due to the extension of his term at the board.
The position of head coach of the Indian cricket team has a rich history and some big names have taken the job in the past. Everyone remembers the likes of Anil Kumble, Gary Kirsten and of course, Greg Chappell but let’s take a look at the complete list of previous head coaches who have taken on the coaching responsibilities of the Men in Blue.
Bishen Singh Bedi (1990-1991) – Former Indian spinner who coached the Indian team for one year. Bedi’s tenure as coach of the Indian team has begun to change from having talented traveling managers to a full-time head coach. However, he did not have the best of times and has not managed the Indian team since then.
Abbas Ali Baig (1991–1992) – Baig took over from Bedi and toured India to Australia in 1991–92, where they later competed in the 1992 World Cup. Baig’s tenure ended with interim managers and since then, the standard starting full-time coach for Men in Blue.

Ajit Wadekar (1992-1996) – Wadekar shared a good relationship with Mohammad Azharuddin and India dominated at home under Wadekar’s coaching. India were winless in 14 Tests, including a 3-0 win over England. The blue shirt team even won the multi-national Hero Trophy, however, India did not have much success away from home.
Sandeep Patil (1996) – Patil was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team ahead of the Men in Blue tour of the UK. However, because of the disastrous results, the former Indian cricketer was fired.
Madan Lal (1996–1997) – Lal’s tenure as India coach was a mixed bag. During his tenure, India beat Australia and South Africa in many categories but after India’s humiliation against the West Indies, in which the Men in Blue were bowled out for 81 and only 120 in the chase, Lal’s term ended.
Anshuman Gaekwad (1997–1999, 2000) – Indian cricket saw some unforgettable moments including a 2-1 home win over Australia, Anil Kumble’s miraculous 10-stroke knock over opponents.Pakistan and ODI series draw of New Zealand.

Kapil Dev (1999–2000) – Honestly, the 1983 World Cup winning Indian captain’s tenure as a coach was dismal. Kapil has given up on the match-fixing allegations, the Test series losses in Australia and South Africa at home.
John Wright (2000-2005) – India’s first foreign coach and one of the longest serving men in the history of Indian cricket. Along with Sourav Ganguly, Wright has brought a new face to Indian cricket. Wright won Test matches in England and Australia, an unforgettable comeback against Australia in 2001 and the NatWest series in 2002, Wright was at the heart of the newly formed Indian cricket team.
Greg Chappell (2005–2007) – Chappell’s tenure as coach of the Indian cricket team will long be remembered for his match against Sourav Ganguly. India lost the Test series to Pakistan, South Africa and a shock exit from the 2007 World Cup group ended Chappell’s stay with the Indian team.
Gary Kirsten (2008–2011) – Kirsten is the only full-time coach to have led India to a World Cup final. Along with MS Dhoni, Kirsten worked to develop young players and give them a platform to prove themselves for the senior team. India drew a Test series with Sri Lanka and South Africa as they finished in the final of the Asia Cup. Kirsten chose not to renew her contract after India won the 2011 World Cup.

Duncan Fletcher (2011–2015) – Fletcher had a good tenure. Under Zimbabwe’s leadership, India won the Champions Trophy but lost continuously to teams like England and Australia. The Men in Blue even lost a home series to England so Ravi Shastri was appointed Team Manager to help Fletcher sort things out. However, when India were eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup, Fletcher’s tenure as India’s head coach came to an end.
Ravi Shastri (2015-2016) – Under Shastri’s first term, India won the Test series in Sri Lanka, beat South Africa 3-0 at home and achieved excellent results in T20Is including the Asia Cup championship.
Anil Kumble (2016–2017) – India had a successful period under Kumble. The men in blue have lost just one Test in 13, including a Test series win against the Windies while beating the likes of New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia at home. However, due to disagreements among some team members, Kumble demanded his resignation but he remains one of the most successful coaches of the Indian cricket team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Cricket Advisory Committee on Wednesday appointed Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. Dravid will lead the team from the upcoming home series against New Zealand, which starts on November 17.
“The cricket advisory committee comprising Ms. Sulakshana Naik and Mr. RP Singh on Wednesday unanimously appointed Mr. Rahul Dravid as the Chief Coach of Team India (Senior Men). BCCI invited applications for the post on 26 October to appoint his successor Ravi Shastri, whose term will end after the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup,” BCCI said in a press release.
