Rinku Singh once again finished with flying colors for Kolkata Knight Riders as they beat Punjab Kings by five wickets on Monday to keep their IPL playoff hopes alive. A half-century from KKR captain Nitish Rana and a big boost from Andre Russell in the dead of their 180 chase allowed Rinku to close out the game with a 10-ball-21 not out.
Ipl 2023 Points Table: Kkr Enter 10 Point Logjam; Purple Cap Race Heats Up
Earlier, Varun Chakaravarthy once again led their bowling department brilliantly to take 3/26 as KKR put up a neat bowling display to restrict PBKS to a sub-par 179 for seven after the hosts opted to a to bat slow wicket. In reply, KKR’s batting performance was led by Rana’s stellar effort as he was promoted to No.3 and laid the foundation with a 38-ball 51 (6×4, 1×6).
Needing 56 off 28 balls after Rana became Rahul Chahar’s second victim, Russell went ballistic against Sam Curran, who smashed him for three sixes in four balls in the 20-run over to equalize in KKR’s favor to turn, who needed six from the last over.
But death over specialist Arshdeep Singh, who had six to defend, took him down the wire with four off the first four balls. There was more drama when Russell was run out on the last ball as a calm Rinku Singh (21 not out; 10b) again came to KKR’s rescue by sealing victory with a last-ball boundary.
KKR’s win is an additional setback in the fight for at least four qualification spots. They are the fifth team to have 10 points and RR lead the lineup based on their net run rate. KKR is now fifth with a net rate of -0.079. However, they could go lower based on who wins Wednesday’s clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who both have a game in hand and 10 points each. Third-placed Lucknow Super Giants are just one point ahead of the rest with 11 points, while second-placed Chennai Super Kings are at 13. The Gujarat Titans lead the table with 16 points.
