In T20s, India need players who can bat around Viratt Kohli and Rohit Sharma and play with more freedom. India won the first T20I despite hitting fewer boundaries than the West Indies, but just like Kohli’s special knock, that was the exception, not the rule. That is the reason why West Indies in Mumbai can go into the decider as the slight favourites.

He knew he was special. On the pitch at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, as Virat Kohli offered condolences to the West Indies, he took a moment before walking to the dressing room. With the hand he had for a handshake, he grabbed the helmet hidden under his arm and lifted it. The bat also came up, acknowledging the applause of the enthralled crowd. It was a gesture usually reserved for a century. His unbeaten knock of 94, from 50 balls, was six less but worth more.

It was also an innings that showed a very different side to Kohli, a period where he looked deadly, and it is for this reason that it is important. I’m not a guy who hits the ball, I rely more on my timing.

But for those 20 balls, Kohli tried to be someone else, and he did it because that’s what modern T20 cricket demands. Today’s game has little time for indulgences like a few early singles, or settling. As Kohli went on to say, the game puts you in ‘that zone’ where the scoreboard dictates style. Kohli didn’t like that zone so he went back to himself and found another way to win. And there it will stay. “The basic foundation is that I don’t want to change my game too much, (as) I play all three formats,” he said. We probably won’t see many more such spells from Kohli, probably until the next sighting of Halley’s Comet.

But if Kohli doesn’t change, someone else will have to, and that’s something the selectors and team managers don’t want to do. India’s T20I team and ODI squad for this series differed by just one player, when they were first announced. Only Shikhar Dhawan’s injury has given KL Rahul a glimpse, and he has shown why he should be kept in the shortest format. The promotion of Shivam Dube, who was mainly used to hit quick boundaries, was a very welcome move.

There is value in having match-fixing batsmen, especially when those batsmen are of the quality of Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but India need to pick players around them who can take more risks.
