I have been watching cricket at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for over a decade. The MCG Library, run and curated by David Studham, is one of the best in the world and contains some unique gems from cricket history. Most importantly, Studham has an ‘open’ policy and the library is a researcher’s dream.

Melbourne Joins Clamour To Replace Perth If Ashes Test Moved

Over the years, scientists and journalists from all over the world have built a library at home. Thematic exhibitions are an added bonus.

If the library is close in front of the G, outside, the MCG welcomes visitors with images of Australian legends. When you reach the end of Jolimont Road, where Cricket Australia is based, and get out of the taxi outside the MCG, you meet a bronzed Dennis Lillee about to deliver one of his kills. Walking to your left you will come across Shane Warne, a statue that was unveiled during the 2011-2012 Indian season.

He was greeted in front by Donald Bradman and Bill Ponsford. Two of Australia’s greatest players of all time, their giant posters on the side of the escalator are the first sign that one has entered the holy grail. Every floor has photo and souvenir shops, and the experience of watching football doesn’t get any better than at the MCG.

Yes, God can be history, and the Garden of Eden has passion. Adelaide Oval and Sydney Cricket Ground can be very good. But the passion you feel at the MCG is second to none.

Melbourne Stadium Has A Roof. Why Is Mcg Not Covered?’: Vaughan Furious At Icc

Since its restoration for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the stadium has become more like a colosseum. It is a battlefield where only the good survive. When 90,000 are packed into G, the atmosphere explodes.

Historically, Bay 13 is one of the most famous cricket grounds in the world – because all those who watched racial violence from this facility threw visitors.

While racial slurs are now a thing of the past, hatred is still very much alive.

The border football ground is Rod Laver Stadium in Australia. The tour is guided and leads through the walk of the champions, through the corridor where the players go out onto the central court. On both sides of the fairway there are statues of Aussie Open champions – legends like Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Martina Navratilova…

If the India-Pakistan match in Adelaide was too much for the cabin, the mayhem between India and South Africa at the MCG this week will be the real deal. Despite selling 50,000 tickets, not more than 42,000,000 people at the Oval when India played Pakistan last Sunday.

If Cricket Australia accepts, the ‘missing’ 8,000,000 – can’t come to Adelaide because of no extra flights, exorbitant hotel prices etc.

Melbourne, however, is a different kettle of fish. Used for Big Match. The All Blacks v Wallabies rugby match in Melbourne is always packed, and the 85,000,000 crowd is not the first time at the MCG. What will come first, however, is a neutral game for sale. Outside of Australia, the MCG has never been full.

And that’s where the Indian fans make the difference. Fewer than 70,000 Indian fans are expected to turn up at the MCG on Sunday. An Indian victory against South Africa – a feat unprecedented in World Cup history – will end the romance.

The MCG, truly one of the world’s greatest stadiums, was built in 1853 when the Melbourne Cricket Club needed to find a new stadium as Australia’s first railway was coming to the oval. The Melbourne Cricket Ground has been big since – the first Test cricket match was played here in 1877, the Olympic Games were held here in 1956 and every year on the last Saturday in September, the biggest show in Australian sport, the AFL Grand Final, descends took to the ‘G’ to fill it with 100,000,000 screaming sports fans (the attendance was still 121,000,000 for the 1970 Grand Final between Carlton and Collingwood).

But the ‘G’ is more than a coliseum for sports fighters. Many musical concerts have been organized here, and the G-man (ahem, God) himself paid a visit in the form of Pope John Paul, who held mass at the MCG during his visit to Melbourne in 1986.

Today, with the recent renovation of the north end of the stadium (the largest stadium seen in 150 years), the ground seats 100,000 and is home to the Victorian Bushrangers and Melbourne Stars cricket teams. Four AFL clubs play regular home games at the MCG – Melbourne, Richmond, Collingwood and Hawthorn.

The MCG tour operates on non-match days, with access to the stands, coaches’ boxes, conservatory, players’ dressing rooms and the pitch itself when available. Registration is not required for individuals and small groups.

Melbourne Stadium has only hosted three Tests in the past, the last being in 2007 when the Wallabies emerged victorious, defeating New Zealand 20-15 in front of around 80,000 spectators. Wallabies coach Eddie Jones said: “The Rugby Championship is one of the biggest competitions in the world and playing against top teams in South Africa, New Zealand and Argentina in a World Cup year is good preparation for our team.” It’s not just a game though – it’s an event for the passionate rugby community with fans, exciting entertainment, great food, drink and much more.
