Kolkata Knight Riders have signed Premier League debutant Jason Roy for the Indian Premier League (IPL) to bolster their batting line-up weakened by the absence of Shreyas Iyer and Shakib Al Hasan, the organizers said on Wednesday.

Kolkata captain Iyer has been ruled out of the entire IPL as he needs surgery and will also miss the World Cup final against Australia in June.

All-rounder Shakib, who is currently leading Bangladesh in the one-off Test against Ireland in Mirpur, cited national team commitments citing his unavailability.

Kolkata spent $341,671 to buy Roy, who played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2021 season, the IPL organizers said in a statement.

Roy’s match-winning century eclipsed Babar Azam’s ton earlier in the day. The Peshawar Zalmi captain scored 115 runs off 65 balls. At 241, Roy lit up the Rawalpindi sky with his fireworks and helped the Gladiators chase the ball with 10 balls to spare. This is the most successful run chase in PSL history.

His 145 points surpassed the previous best PSL score registered by Colin Ingram. The South African scored an unbeaten 127 for Quetta Gladiators in the 2019 edition. Roy reached his century off just 44 balls, the second fastest in league history. His innings included 20 fours and 5 sixes.

Roy, who has been an integral part of England’s white-ball team for the past few years, was dropped from England’s T20 squad just five months ago. England were weaker with the opening bat last summer and paid the price by not being included in the World T20 squad. Meanwhile, after his T20I World Cup knockout, he was hit with yet another disappointment. It remained unsold in the IPL auction. Roy was picked by Gujarat Titans last year. However, he decided to take an indefinite break from cricket before the tournament.

He last played a T20I in England in July 2022 against South Africa. The 32-year-old is yet to break into the shortest format team. Roy’s current knock in the PSL comes a day before England begin their T20I series against Bangladesh.

Roy, meanwhile, remains an integral part of England’s ODI system. He recently scored a man-of-the-match century against Bangladesh in the second ODI at Mirpur.

According to the statement, Mr. Roy pleaded guilty to Section 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. in the commission of a level 1 crime according to Article

“In the event of a level 1 violation of the Code of Conduct, the decision of the match referee is final and binding,” the statement said.
