“It will not only increase our target audience, but also enrich our content offerings on digital platforms. With the cash infusion proposed in the terms of the transaction, it gives us the firepower to begin competitively bidding for these premium sports properties.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also recently announced that the tender for IPL media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle will be launched in October once the preparation of the two new teams is completed.
As the bidding countdown begins, we would see fierce competition between several broadcasting giants intent on grabbing the media rights to the world’s richest cricket league.
Sony previously held the IPL rights from 2008 to 2017 for the Indian subcontinent. Their rival broadcaster Star currently holds the platform-neutral global rights of IPL from 2018 to 2022 worth Rs 16,347.5 crore.

There are also reports that US streaming platform Amazon Prime Video is also planning to bid for the media rights.
We are all set to witness an intense battle between these media giants in the upcoming bidding war for IPL media rights.

The combined value of TV and digital rights for the next IPL cycle (2023-27) for the Indian subcontinent has more than doubled to INR 39,775 million (approximately USD 5.10 billion). The figure came after the highest bids for TV and digital rights were confirmed on Monday, the second day of the IPL rights e-auction. learned that the winning bid for Package A – TV rights for the Indian subcontinent – was INR 57.5 million (about USD 7.36 million) per match, while Package B – Digital rights for the Indian subcontinent – got the highest bid of INR 50 crore (approximately USD 6.41 million) per match. In Indian rupee terms, the IPL value per match for the new rights cycle has almost doubled [98% jump] from the INR 54.23 million (then $8.47 million) paid by Star India for the 2018-cycle 22. Converted to US dollars, this is a jump of 62.7% from 8.47 million to 13.78 million. In terms of value per match, the combined INR 107.5 million (about USD 13.78 million) places the IPL among the highest in the sport, alongside the NFL and the English Premier League. Each NFL game is worth $35.07 million* [based on a 10-year rights deal signed in 2022], while the value of a Premiership game under the 2022-25 rights deal is listed at $11.34 million**.

Based on 74 matches per season over the next five years, the new package of TV rights is worth INR 21,275 million (approximately $2.72 billion) while the digital rights are worth INR 18,500 million (approximately $2.37 billion). In terms of INR value, the total is 2.43 times or 143% higher than the previous IPL rights deal worth INR 16,347.5 million (around $2.55 billion at the time). In US dollars, the increase is exactly double. The names of the winners have not yet been released by the IPL authorities as the e-auction is still ongoing, with bidders competing for the last two packages: Package C [digital rights for the Indian subcontinent for a special bouquet of matches] and Package D [rest of the world]. This also changes the total value of the IPL rights for the next cycle. The biggest driver behind this growth in IPL rights is the exponential growth in digital rights. 18,500 crore paid by the highest bidder was itself 13% more than the total money paid by Star India to acquire global consolidated rights [television and digital] for the previous five-year cycle. The importance and rapid growth of the digital footprint in the Indian market can be gauged by the fact that in 2017, the highest bid for digital rights by Facebook was INR 3900 million (around USD 610 million at the time). e-auction, which started on Sunday, the rules were that the bids on packages A and B would be placed together and the winner of package A would be determined first. That winner also had the opportunity to participate in a bidding contest with the highest bid on package B. At the end of the first day of the e-auction, the highest bid for the digital rights was parked at INR 48 million (approximately US$6.15 million) per contest. Once the highest bid for package A was determined, this bidder decided to compete for package B as well. As a result, the value per match for package B increased by INR 50 million before it was sold. The highest bid for TV rights was 17.3% higher than the base price of INR 49 million (approximately USD 6.3 million) set by the IPL for package A. The corresponding number of digital rights saw a huge jump of 51.5% above the base price of 33 million INR (about USD 4.2 million). Package C is a “special package” – non-exclusive games including the tournament opener, weekend night games and four playoffs including the final. While the opener and playoffs are mandatory, the IPL will determine the number and which of the night’s double-headers games based on the aggregate.
