Indian Cricket Team Coach List
Indian cricket fans are devastated after India’s exit from the 2019 ICC World Cup following an 18-run defeat against New Zealand in the first semi-final at Manchester’s Old Trafford. People were irked by the fact that India, one of the ‘hosts’ to lift the coveted trophy, failed to qualify for the finals of the quadrennial event. The awkward game began with many fingers pointing at the team’s current head coach Ravi Shastri, while others blamed skipper Virat Kohli and the team management for not delivering in the knockout stages of the exhibition.
Why The Cac Chose To Stick With Ravi Shastri
Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited fresh applications for the post of head coach as Shastri’s contract expires after India’s tour of the West Indies. However, Shastri may continue to lead the party as the board has extended his tenure.
The position of head coach of the Indian cricket team has a storied history with some big names holding the position in the past. Everyone remembers the likes of Anil Kumble, Gary Kirsten and of course Greg Chappell, but let’s look at the full list of head coaches who first took on the responsibility of coaching the Men in Blue.
Bishen Singh Bedi (1990-91) – India’s veteran spinner was the mainstay of the Indian team for just one year. Bedi started as a coach for the Indian national team, from tour managers to full-time head coaches. However, he did not have the best of times and did not lead the Indian team from there.
Abbas Ali Baig (1991-92) – Baig took over from Bedi and guided India to Australia in 1991-92, after which they played in the 1992 World Cup. Baig’s tenure ended the tenure of interim managers and the Men in Blue have since started full-time coaching.

Ajit Wadekar (1992-96) – Wadekar had a good partnership with Mohammad Azharuddin and India dominated at home under Wadekar’s tutelage. India are unbeaten in 14 Tests, 3-0 white wicket against England. The Men in Blue won the Hero Cup for several nations, but India didn’t win much.
Sandeep Patil (1996) – Patil was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team ahead of the Men in Blue tour of England. However, the former Indian cricketer was sacked due to the unfortunate result.
Madan Lal (1996-97) – Lal’s tenure as coach of the Indian national team was mixed. During his tenure, India defeated Australia and South Africa in various series, but after India’s humiliation against the West Indies, where the Men in Blue were bowled out for 81 and chased just 120, Lal’s time is over.
Anshuman Gaekwad (1997-99, 2000) – India had some memorable moments including a 2-1 home win against Australia, Anil Kumble’s magical 10-wicket haul against arch-rivals Pakistan and the ODI series against New Zealand.
Sri Lanka Cricket And Head Coaches
Kapil Dev (1999-2000) – The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper’s tenure as India coach was, frankly, a nightmare. Allegations of match-fixing, in Test series wins at home in Australia and South Africa, led to Kapil’s resignation.
John Wright (2000-2005) – India’s first overseas coach and one of the longest serving in Indian cricket history. Along with Sourav Ganguly, Wright gave a new face to Indian cricket. Winning Test matches in England and Australia, a memorable comeback against Australia in 2001 and the NatWest series in 2002, Wright was at the heart of the new Indian cricket team.
Greg Chappell (2005-07) – Chappell’s tenure as the coach of the Indian cricket team will long be remembered for his famous clash with Sourav Ganguly. India lost the Test series against Pakistan and South Africa, and a shock exit from the 2007 World Cup group stage ended Chappell’s tenure with the Indian team.
Gary Kirsten (2008-2011) – Kirsten is the only full-time captain to have led India to a World Cup title. Along with MS Dhoni, Kirsten worked to develop youngsters while giving them an opportunity to prove themselves with the best team. India had a showdown with Sri Lanka and South Africa to end the Asia Cup finals. Kirsten decided against a contract extension after India won the 2011 World Cup.

Duncan Fletcher (2011-2015) – Fletcher is a great speaker. Under Zimbabwe, India won the Champions Trophy but continued to lose matches against England and Australia. The men in blue lost their home game against England and so Ravi Shastri was appointed manager to help Fletcher smooth things out. However, with India’s semi-final exit at the 2015 World Cup, Fletcher’s tenure as India’s head coach came to an end.
Ravi Shastri (2015-16) – In Shastri’s first tenure, India won an exhibition match in Sri Lanka, beat South Africa 3-0 at home and achieved their best ever T20Is with a win in the Asia Cup.
Anil Kumble (2016-17) – India won under Kumble. The Men in Blue have lost just one Test in 13, winning the Test against the Windies while beating the likes of New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia at home. However, due to internal disagreements among some team members, Kumble resigned but continues to be one of the most successful coaches of the Indian cricket team.
