World Cup winner Claire Taylor believes Heather Knight’s England side will reach the semi-finals of this year’s Women’s Cricket World Cup.

England showed great improvement after failing to win a match in the multi-format Women’s Ashes last month as they pushed Australia to the final over in the tournament opener on Saturday.

The Knights began their title defense with a 12-run loss but Taylor, who won the tournament in 2009, believes the improvement has been huge.

“We did better against Australia than before (in the Ashes) but I think we have to go to the semi-finals and then who is the competition,” Taylor told the PA news agency.

Australia entered the tournament as favourites, having become the first country to professionalize their domestic women’s game in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash in 2015-16, and have dominated the women’s scene for the past four years.

England did not follow suit until 2019, when the first regional professional contracts were introduced after the heavy Ashes defeat, but Taylor believes the international team could catch on.

Women’s Cricket World Cup Final

“Yes. I don’t know how long, it will take time to see the benefits from this local structure in the region, I think it will take a few years – maybe less time to see the benefits of hundreds,” he said.

Taylor played for England for over a decade and was part of the evolution of the women’s cricket event at Lord’s.

“For our young domestic cricketers, they play in teams with three internationals and a couple of England players, which will accelerate their development.
