The tour starts with the Boxing Day Test on December 26 and will now take place at Centurion Supersport Park. The second Test will take place in the new year, with Johannesburg hosting the match from 3 to 7 January, followed by the final at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town.
The ODIs will be played after a four-day gap, with the first and second matches of the series being played in Paarl on January 19 and 21 respectively, followed by the final in Cape Town on the 23 of January.
The Test series forms part of the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, while the ODI series forms part of the ICC Men’s World Cup Super League, the Cup qualifiers of the 2023 ICC World Cup.
The change in the itinerary was the result of the emergence of the new Omicron variant of Covid-19, which was identified for the first time in South Africa. The new mutant had cast a shadow over the fate of the entire tour even as India A’s tour of South Africa went ahead as planned. However, on Saturday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah lifted the suspension and informed that the tour minus the T20Is will continue. A few hours later, during the BCCI AGM, it was decided that the tour will now start on December 26, nine days after the original date of the first Test.

According to the original schedule, three test matches were to be played in Johannesburg from 17 December, followed by the Boxing Day Test at Centurion and the final match in Cape Town from 3 to 7 January . The initial dates were the 11th, 14th of January. and 16 with Cape Town hosting the second and third matches. The four T20Is, which have now been rescheduled, were to be played on January 19, 21, 23 and 26.
