Rahul Dravid was appointed as the new coach of the Indian men’s cricket team by the Board of Control for Cricket in the Advisory Committee for Cricket in India on Wednesday. Dravid will lead the team in the upcoming series at home against New Zealand starting November 17. Current coach Ravi Shastry’s tenure is coming to an end after the conclusion of the current ICC T20 World Championship.

“The Cricket Advisory Committee, consisting of Mrs. Sulakshana Naik and Mr. R. P. Singh on Wednesday unanimously appointed Mr. Rahul Dravid as Head Coach of Indian Senior Men’s Team. The former India captain will take charge of the upcoming home series against New Zealand. The BCCI applied for the position on October 26 to appoint a successor to Ravi Shastri, whose tenure expires after the ongoing ICC T20 World Championship,” the BCCI press release said.

“The board congratulates Mr. Shastry (former team manager and coach), Mr. B. Arun (bowling coach), Mr. R. Sridhar (field trainer) and Mr. Vikram Rathur (batting coach) for a successful tenure. The Cricket team took a bold and fearless approach and performed well both at home and away. India climbed to the top spot in the Test format and reached the final of the inaugural Test World Cup in England.
“India became the first Asian team to win the Test Series in Australia (2018-19) followed by another Series win in 2020-21. Zealand 5-0. Under the direction of Mr. To Shastri and his team, India won all seven Test series at home,” the post read.
Dravid said he was “absolutely honoured” to be named the team’s head coach.

There will be some important multi-team competitions in the next two years and I look forward to working with the players and support staff to realize our potential,” Dravid was quoted as saying in a press release.
Dravid’s former teammate and current BCCI president Surav Ganguly welcomed his new role and also praised his efforts to educate young cricketers in the country.
“BCCI welcomes Rahul Dravid as Head Coach of India’s senior men’s team. Rahul has had a brilliant career as a player and is one of the best in the game. He also served with distinction in Indian cricket as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). “Rahul’s efforts at NCA have nurtured some young cricketing talents to represent the country on the international stage. I hope his new job will take Indian cricket to new heights,” Ganguly said.
Rahul Dravid had an illustrious career as a cricketer, making him one of the legends of the game. He led India to historic Test series victories in England and the West Indies and is the fourth highest run-scorer in Test cricket history with 13,288 runs in 164 matches. He also scored over 10,000 runs in one-day internationals and was part of the Indian team that reached the final of the 2003 ICC World Cup.
