India Cricket Match – Home » Home of Cricket » News » IND v NZ 1st Test: Srikar Bharat maximizes chance of upset
“Luck” is a commonly used, sometimes overused term, while “preparation” is synonymous with opportunity; but for Srikar Bharat his fortune was just that. Bharat has been on the field for some time and gets a chance to show his core talent as wicket-keeper-batsman even before a showdown was in sight as India’s first wicket- Keeper Wriddhiman Saha was forced out on matchday three against New Seeland release in Kanpur. Saturday with a stiff neck. Bharat has always been considered a great defender and his punching power has increased in the past. However, with the formidable Rishabh Pant and Saha nearby, Bharat was and is on a normal course. Then strange things happen again. A while ago, the Australia-based netballers made their debut for India and played a pivotal role in a historic victory.
Bharat Cricket Match
Bharat’s three layoffs on day three showed he is quite capable of competing at the highest level. Will Young, batting on 89, caught a fat wicket trying to pick up an injury and Bharat stayed down, making the tough catch look too easy. Furthermore, as the Chiefs went on offense it was Bharat who convinced captain Ajinkya Rahane to make a check and India made the first breakthrough. There was a minor setback on his first day when he failed to capitalize on a difficult leg chance from Ross Taylor, then lost the leg again and was caught off guard by the batsman. The position to bring a glove to the tight end, his technique against the chops in a hard-to-catch slot speak volumes. The final throw was his save and was bowled as an easy throw. His third dismissal, a chip from a well-positioned Tom Latham, was no accident and showed again that the Visakhapatnam native can keep his composure under pressure. He was also very entertaining on the mic and it’s fair to say that he made the most of the unexpected chance he was given as a substitute goalkeeper.

In terms of talent, 37-year-old Saha is by far the best in India, maybe the best in the world, and India have a great batsman in 24-year-old Rishabh Pant. And here 28-year-old Bharat finds himself in a difficult position, having not played an international game to date. In 2018, Bharat was close to finding a spot on the Indian Test team then touring England, but the national squad chose to promote Pant and the rest, as they say, is history. A stint by Pant in Australia in 2020 also raised hopes of an ODI closure, but that, too, didn’t materialize. But with this temporary recall, Bharat has returned to the spotlight and has joined Pant’s side, and if Saha can’t recover in time for the Mumbai Test, Bharat could be in line for his much-anticipated debut. And if Saha is fit and back for the rest of the series, Bharat could well lose himself and wait for luck again.
Born in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, the 27-year-old is almost a veteran of top-flight cricket with 78 games under his belt. The hitter-keeper has 4,283 runs in 123 innings with a 37.24 average, including 9 hundreds and 23 fifties. Bharat made his first-class debut against Kerala in 2012/13 at the age of 19, a few years later in 2015 he scored a record Ranji Trophy and became the first Indian batsman-keeper to win. Triple hundred in the country’s top tournament. Starting the inning, Bharat collected a massive 308 balls from 311 balls for Andhra Pradesh against Goa in Ongole in February 2015.
His ability to score early and get much of his runs over the limits earned him an INR 10 lakh contract with the Delhi Daredevils of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2015. -15 Ranji Trophy. He scored over a hundred (in addition to his record threes) and two fifties and was a consistent goalscorer for Andhra at the prestigious tournament. His next hundred came against Vidarbha at the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy in Vijayawada. He batted in fifth place and scored an unbeaten 102 points in the second inning to save the game for his team.

Bharat has been at the helm of the team for a number of years. He was included in India’s blue-chip squad for the 2018–19 Duleep Trophy and, again as a cover for Saha, was included in India’s Test squad for the second Test against Bangladesh in November 2019. He also found himself in India’s ODI squad for the home series against Australia in January 2020 after Rishabh Pant suffered a concussion. Bharat has a decent record on List A with 1,351 runs in 51 games for an average of 28.14 and a batting average of nearly 70 per three hundred, but his best return comes in the longer format. In an unofficial test in February 2019, he posted an impressive performance of 142 on just 139 balls – including 11 fours and 8 sixes – in Wayanad against the England Lions in Wayanad.
He was one of five available players on the India Test team for the home series against England in early 2021. Bharat was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for 20 INR Lacs at auctions in February this year and made eight appearances for the franchise, scoring 191 points. runs at 38.20 and reaches half a century at 122.43. Bharat is widely regarded as one of the top fielders in the domestic league for his intelligence and skill behind the wickets.
