It was a fairytale ending for Sri Lanka at the 2022 Asian Cup, who were crowned champions for the sixth time in the history of the tournament.

India’s Chances To Qualify For Asia Cup 2022 Final

The timing of the victory could not have come at a better time for Sri Lanka – not just the team heading into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, but also the country and the fans who have endured a rough patch at home.

Their tournament started with the worst possible scenario where they were bowled out for 105 against Afghanistan and saw the score in 10.1 overs. The islanders were almost knocked out of the tournament in the group stage before grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat against Bangladesh.

From then on, they became an unstoppable force and more importantly, a solid, well-rounded unit. They beat India and Afghanistan in the Super Four round before beating Pakistan in consecutive matches, including the final.

In this article, we look at the top players, the impact the Asian Cup has had on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and more.

Asia Cup 2022 Final: Never Say Die Sri Lanka Up Against Fiery Pakistan In Fight For The Title

It was a memorable Asia Cup for Mohammad Rizwan, who was the ICC T20I men’s no.1 hitter during the tournament.

The keeper batsman started the tournament with a well-made 43 against India and followed that up by scoring two fifties. Chasing 194 against Hong Kong for a spot in the Super Four, he anchored the innings with an unbeaten 78 off 57. Rizwan was again Pakistan’s top scorer in the Super Four clash against India, where he won a match with 71 of 51 in a film thrillers.

After some underperforming with the bat, Rizwan scored 55 off 49 balls in the final against Sri Lanka but was far from his best. The six he took after fifty took him past Virat Kohli’s tally of 276 runs in the tournament, but the 30-year-old could not take his team home in the final.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, India couldn’t have asked for a better time for Bhuvneshwar Kumar to hit his stride.

The right-arm pacer started his tournament with a brilliant 4/26 in the group stage match against Pakistan, which included the dangerous scalps of Babar Azam and Asif Ali.

He was economically in excellent form against Hong Kong, conceding just 15 runs in three overs while taking wickets. He proved invaluable in the Super Four match against Pakistan and went goalless in the match against Sri Lanka.

In the last match of the tournament in India, the 32-year-old caused chaos with his swing. Bhuvneshwar secured his first five-wicket T20I haul, with all the wickets coming during the Powerplay. He finished the match with the magic number 4-1-4-5. Despite playing less than Pakistan and Sri Lanka, he finished the tournament as the highest wicket taker.

Wanindu Hasaranga started the tournament indifferently but showed what a great champion he is by finishing high. He eventually finished as the second highest wicket-taker and scored a precious run when it mattered most.

The leg-spinner failed to make an impact in Afghanistan’s whirlwind chase of 106 and proved costly in the match against Bangladesh, although he took two wickets. He went goalless in the first two matches of the Super Four phase but turned the game around for Sri Lanka in a gritty final of the tournament.

In the last Super Four match against Pakistan, he broke the batting back order with scalp Babar, Iftikhar Ahmed and Asif Ali as they folded for 121. He played a three-ball cameo for 10* as Sri Lanka convincingly defeated Pakistan with three overs to spare..

In the final against Pakistan, Hasaranga came out to bat in the ninth over as Sri Lanka stared at 58/5. He set the tone with the first four balls and thereby changed the fate of Sri Lanka.

Despite trailing by five, Hasaranga did not back down and continued to hit the boundaries. He crushed Mohammad Hasnain for six and four in the 13th over. He was out after hitting Haris Rauf for back-to-back boundaries, but his 21-ball 36 turned the momentum in Sri Lanka’s favour. His innings helped Bhanuka Rajapaksa to keep his wicket for a death over which ultimately made the difference as the Lions posted 171 targets.

With the ball, he went wicketless in his first three innings. However, he turned the game around when he was tasked to bat in the 17th over by striking Mohammad Rizwan, Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah while hitting just two. Pakistan never managed to recover from then and Sri Lanka took the match by 23 runs.

The 2022 Asian Cup comes at the right time for Asian teams, with five of the six participating countries taking part in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia next month. Ironically, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have already confirmed their places in the Super 12, while Asian Cup winners Sri Lanka had to go through the first round before joining the rest of the squad in the next stage .

Cricket Asia Cup 2022 Schedule

The Asian Cup gives all the teams the experience and stress that comes with playing a multi-team tournament, while also helping to figure out the possible missing pieces in the puzzle.

The Sri Lankan champions now have momentum on their side and if they haven’t already, they will now be strong favorites in Group A Round 1 against Namibia, Netherlands and UAE. While the usual suspects have been in scintillating form, it is the emergence of Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Pramod Madushan as game changers that may just take them even further in the T20 World Cup.

Runner-up Pakistan had some catching up to do after a disappointing start and finish to the tournament. Naseem Shah found a tournament and should be on a plane to Australia, while a possible return of Shaheen Afridi should strengthen their bowling even further.

However, there were some question marks over their streak, starting from Babar Azam’s poor performance. The middle-order is also yet to live up to its billing and could see some shuffling ahead of the T20 World Cup.

The biggest positive for India in the Asian Cup is the return of Virat Kohli. He finished the tournament as the second highest run-getter with 276 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 147.59. He ended his century drought with his ton against Afghanistan and seems to have found his touch once again.

However, India’s early exit from the tournament may force them to reconsider several aspects, including a possible change of opening position and who wears the gloves behind the wicket. Ravindra Jadeja’s injury will force the management to find an adequate replacement while maintaining the balance of the team.

Afghanistan had a topsy-turvy campaign where they showed flashes of brilliance but were not as consistent as they would like. The emergence of Rahmanullah Gurbaz in time for the World Cup overcame their top order, but
