Speaking on the occasion, Siva Reddy said that these competitions are organized in a very transparent manner. He said a letter has been written to the BCCI to set up an anti-corruption unit to avoid any corruption or criticism in the first APL tournament.

He noted that six teams will compete in the tournament, which should begin on July 6. He stated that the women’s APL will also be organized. ACA members and franchise owners have unveiled the logos for the upcoming APL.

The franchisees include Uttarandhra Lions, Rayalaseema Kings, Godavari Titans, Coastal Riders, Bezawada Tigers and Vizag Warriors and the respective franchise owners and ACA members unveiled the logos.

For the Tigers, A Lalith Mohan and Manish Golamaru were the pick of the bowlers, with the pair picking up four wickets each. Mohan finished with figures of 4 for 31 in four overs, while Manish took 4 for 18 in four overs.

In reply, late cameos by Jagadish Reddy (25 off 14 balls) and M Praneeth (48 off 27 balls) went in vain as the Tigers fell short of the target to post 169/7 in 20 overs.

It will be a different kind of monsoon magic for cricket lovers at the inaugural edition of the ongoing six-franchise Andhra Premier League (APL) T-20 Cricket Championship in the city of Destiny.

For the Andhra Cricket Association and Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association, who have received all sorts of accolades for successfully organizing international matches in the last few years, this APL could be another feather in their cap.

The APL was designed to give the average fan of the high-profile Indian Premier League an opportunity to see the domestic talent on offer and give young talent a taste of what it means to play in colors and white balls.

Unsurprisingly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given permission to its affiliate, the ACA, to host the event. Six franchisees – Uttarandhra Lions of KVR Estates, Rayalaseema Kings of Dasaradharam Reddy, Godavari Titans of Malvin Global Energy, Coastal Riders of Surya Granites, Bezwada Tigers of Andhra Hospitals and Vizag Warriors of Pulsus Groups – will battle for the top honour.

With former Andhra Ranji cricketers Sathyaprasad Yachendra as the APL governing body and other members including RV Ch Prasad, former Ranji captain, GV V Gopal Raju as members, the cricketers and officials involved in the operation may not have room for complaints.

For someone who played the game when there were no proper practice facilities and leagues like this weren’t even a distant dream, they know exactly what players, administrators and fans are looking for.

The fact that six 20-man squads with around 400 players have been selected from the auction is proof, if anything, that the ACA has done its homework quite well in giving young and experienced cricketers a chance to compete.

A conscious effort was made to keep the format along the lines of the IPL as well – six teams compete against each other in a round-robin style during the league stage, while the top four teams advance to the playoffs.
