The future of cricket in the country looks bleak with reports suggesting women will not be allowed to take part in cricket, also threatening the Test match against Australia in November.

Records say that the first cricket match was played in Afghanistan in 1839, but Cricket did not immediately develop in the country. It wasn’t until the 1990s that cricket became popular among Afghan refugees in Pakistan, who caught up in the gambling fever.
The Afghanistan Cricket Federation was formed in 1995 by Afghan refugees in Pakistan. When the refugees returned home in 2001, they took a new love for the game and continued to play cricket in Afghanistan, as it was the only sport not banned by the Taliban in the country. In 2001, the Afghanistan Cricket Federation became part of the ICC, when it was elected as an affiliate member. Thus, Afghanistan began their long journey to achieve ODI and Test status.
He started out by playing in second tier and regional tournaments in Pakistan. In 2004, he began to participate in Asian regional tournaments. In 2006, he went to England, played against the second tier eleven of the national team and won 6 out of 7 games. In 2008, they started winning lower ranking tournaments and in the same year they started their 2011 World Cup qualifying campaign. However, they failed to advance to the World Cup, but their efforts paid off as they finally got ODI status in 2009.

The first ODI played by the Afghanistan Cricket team came against Scotland in the fifth World Cup Qualifier playoff and they won by 89 runs. They then went on to win the 2009 ACC Twenty20 Cup in the United Arab Emirates. In 2010 Afghanistan played their first Twenty20 International against Ireland but lost the game by 5 wickets. He then qualified for the 2010 ICC World Twenty20, his greatest achievement to date. Considering that the team started playing cricket in their country a decade ago, this is quite an achievement. However, the performance in this tournament was quite poor. But Afghan Cricket is on the rise and the team is not deterred by the end result. They regrouped and won the ACC Trophy Elite Tournament. He even won silver at the 2010 Asian Games in China. Since then, Afghanistan has risen rapidly, breaking into the top ten of the ICC ODI rankings for the first time in 2015.
2015 was a memorable year for the Afghanistan National Cricket Team as they competed in the ICC World Cup for the first time. Their first opponent was Bangladesh and they lost the game by 105 runs. Afghanistan won only one of their World Cup matches, a wicket win against Scotland and they were knocked out of the tournament in the first round. Despite the loss though, the World Cup has been an amazing experience for the team as they have gone from playing cricket in refugee camps in Pakistan to playing against some of the best teams in the world. This is a great achievement for the country and its battle-hardened players.
After gaining valuable World Cup experience, the Afghanistan cricket team continues its development. In 2017, the ICC awarded first-class status to Afghanistan’s four-day national competition.
The Afghanistan cricket team does not have a home base in the country as, for security reasons, home matches are not played in their country. So, they use different stadiums in Asia as their playing field on different occasions. In 2016, the Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, India was used as the Afghanistan headquarters.
Taliban Loves Cricket: Afghanistan Cricket Board Optimistic Sport Won’t Face Extremist Brunt
On June 14, 2018, Afghanistan played their first test match against India in Bangalore but lost the match. Afghanistan have played 101 ODIs since 2009 and have won 53. Their Twenty20 record is even better – they have won 46 of the 68 games they have played so far.
Mohammad Nabi is the highest run-scorer in ODIs, with 2,301 runs at an average of 29.12. Nabi is also the biggest wicket-taker, taking 109 wickets at an average of 31.16. Afghanistan’s highest singles ODI score is 131*, scored by Mohammad Shahzad against Zimbabwe. The best ODI bowling figure is rising superstar Rashid Khan, who finished with figures of 7/18 against the West Indies in 2017.
The Afghanistan national cricket team is currently managed by Asghar Afghan who has played 86 ODIs and 51 T20Is for Afghanistan. He is a right-handed hitter and a right-arm, middle-arm fastballer. Afghanistan Skipper is one of many fine players in the team, which also includes Rahmat Shah, a right-handed batsman, who bowls with a broken leg and right arm and has played 45 ODIs for his country. Afghan goalkeeper Mohammad Shahzad is a veteran who also has an eye for the spectacular on and off the pitch. He has played 69 ODIs and 60 T20Is for Afghanistan and has reached 4 ODI Centuries and 1 T20I Century so far. He is also the second best runner in Afghanistan after Mohammad Nabi. Nabi is another talented player in the team and is the most experienced Afghan cricketer today, with 98 ODIs and 60 T20Is to his name.
But there is no denying that the real star of this team is Rashid Khan. The man who set the IPL on fire is relatively new to the circuit, but he is an excellent spinner and skilled puncher in the T20 game. He has played 46 ODIs since his debut in 2015 and has taken 105 wickets. To put it in perspective, he doesn’t turn 20 until September 20 of this year!
